Sport balls that require a greater degree of bounce, such as handballs and basketballs, also are aided by air pressure, or the amount of air inside the ball. The air inside the ball puts pressure on the rubber walls, which helps the ball spring back into its original position after it hits the court’s surface and deforms. Purpose: Ball bounce and air pressure is important for basketball because: 1. Not enough: Dribbling is practically impossible. Not only does it support our hypothesis, but the data also provides some additional information. According to our data, as the air pressure in the ball increases beyond 8 psi...Air Pressure in Soccer Balls J0107 Objectives/Goals The goal of our project was to find out how air pressure inside of a soccer ball affects how high it bounces if dropped and how far it goes when kicked. We also wanted to establish a relation between first, second, and third bounces. The smaller the ball, the harder it is going to be to see the differences in bounce height. Use an air pump and an air pressure gauge to put air in the ball and to measure the air pressure in the ball. Make sure you adjust the air pressure between bounces and measure and record the pressure readings each time. The combination of the material properties of a ball (surface textures, actual materials, amount of air, hardness/ softness, and so on) affects the height of its bounce. The complexity of this investigation encourages students to begin to think critically about the design and results of the investigation.
